Code Club

For all of 2016 and 2017 I have been in Code Club. Code Club is where you use Scratch and Trinket. So far I am on Trinket stage 1 but today I am going to share 2 projects with you. Drive Me Crazy and Create Your Own World. To play Drive Me Crazy use the left in right arrows to turn the car while try to do the whole track (try not to touch green).

ICreate Your Own World use the arrows to get around the 3 levels. In level 2 and 3 do not touch the bad red guy, or you will have to start again. Also in level 3 to get past the doors you have to get the keys before getting to the treasure.

Chapter Chat: Wonder

For term 4 Room 18 have been part of Chapter Chat again. This time we have been reading the book Wonder. Wonder is a book that has lots of lessons about how to be nice to people like "don't judge a boy by his face" and "if you had the choice of being right or being kind, chose kind". The book is about a boy who has a problem with his face and how hard it is to be like that. This is one of my activities that I made it with Kenny and Gabe. August the main character lives in Manhattan and we had to make Manhattan out of Lego.

I hope you like it.

Animal report

Near the end of Term 3 Jackson's studio (Rm 18) had started doing animal reports. We got to do any animal we liked and I chose Humpback Whales. First we did lots and lots of note taking and when we finally got the right amount of facts we started to write our report. Then we made a fancy background for it. For my report I used the website PowToon and it took 3 weeks. Here is my finished Powtoon report. I hope you like it.

Holes Chapter Chat

This term our class participated again in Chapter Chat, a twitter-book chat. This term we read ‘Holes’ by Louis Sachar. The book was about this person called Stanley Yelnats who goes to Camp Green Lake because he supposedly stole some very famous shoes. Camp Green Lake is a camp for bad boys. At Camp Green Lake he met lots of people with nicknames like X-ray(Rex),Squid(Alan)and a load of other boys like Zero who becomes his friend. Later the other boys give Stanley the name Caveman. Then he runs away with Zero and they live on muddy water and other foods. Then they came back to find a treasure chest. Next he got released since they found out that he is innocent.

Each fortnight we completed various activities and answered questions based on what we had read. We then shared our activities and answers on Twitter with Room 20.

Here are two activities that I have completed on the book Holes.

My first activity is a map. It is from everywhere major they went to like Camp Green Lake and lots of other places. It includes Gods Thumb(a mountain) and all the holes that they dig. I made it with Gabe and Kenny on a Google Drawing.

The second activity is a comparison from what he thought Camp Green Lake is like and what it was really like. I made it on a Google Drawing and I had help with Kenny. You can see what he thought and what the reality was. This is my favourite one out of the two.

I hope you enjoyed my activities. Which one was your favourite?

Zentangle Art

This term we have been busy finishing our calendar art. Each year at our school we do a piece of art that can go on calendars, diaries or cards. Our parents can then buy these for gifts, if they choose. This year our class did our calendar art around the theme Zentangle.

First we looked at different Zentangle patterns and then we practised drawing these patterns in our art book, before doing our good copy.

Here is my finished calendar art for 2017.

Leave me a comment to let me know what you think of my art.

Robot art

Over the last term and a bit we have been doing different pieces of robot art for our school’s Art Exhibition later in the term. Here is my vicious teeth robot art. This is how I made it I folded the paper then drew it, coloured it in and then dyed it. The things I used were paper, dye and crayons. It took me 2 weeks.

I hope you enjoy my robot artwork.  Have you ever done any robot art?

PowToon book report

We have been learning how to create a book report with PowerToon. I have made my animated book report on Ms Bixby's Last Day. Ms Bixby's Last Day was our serial story in Term 2 that we read as part of Chapter Chat. The book was written by John David Anderson.

I hope you enjoy my PowToon book report.
Have you read Ms Bixby’s Last Day?

Chapter Chat

This term was the first time Jackson's Studio joined Chapter Chat, a Twitter-based book chat for New Zealand students in Years 5-6. We read the book Ms Bixby's Last Day! This week coming is our last week, but we were super organised and finished the book on Friday. Each week we read part of the book and complete tasks based on the chapter. On Fridays we join other NZ students on Twitter to share our work and discuss the pages we have read. As well as encouraging a love of reading, Chapter Chat also provides a great opportunity to learn about good social media etiquette and practise using social media in a positive way.

Here is my gravestone that I
made with Gabe and Kenny.

Here is my map that Kenny, Gabe, Lucas and I made.

Here is St Mary's hospital which I made with Gabe and Kenny.

Wainui Camp

From Wednesday 17th May to Friday 19th May we went on camp to Wainui. Some of the things we did were raft building, kayaking and abseiling. My highlight from camp was abseiling. Here is my camp poem where I have used my senses to describe the best thing I did on camp.

CAMP CHALLENGE

I heard people screaming “ Weeeeeeeeeeeee” as they abseiled down the 10 metre tree.

I heard people chanting “You can do it Jonty!” as I kept climbing higher and higher.

I saw the tree looming up before me while I looked up the great height.

I felt the huge lump in the tree scratch me while I climbed past it.

I felt my legs shake frantically as I asked for some help to stand up.

I wondered if the rope would snap and I would fall down, killing myself.

I wondered if I would land in the tiny river near the landing place and get very wet feet.

I hope you enjoyed my poem.

What was your highlight from going on camp?

Division problem solving

Last week our class was doing some problem solving. We were learning how to solve division problems by using different strategies.

Here is one of my questions that I solved with my maths mate.

Francois was making some new rugby bibs for his rugby team. He had a total of 3.2 metres of fabric. Each bib takes 0.4m of fabric to make. How many bibs can Francois make for his team?

I have decided to use the strategies place value and reversibility.
Here is my place value strategy:

3.2 ÷ 0.4 = 8

2.0 ÷ 0.4 = 5
1.2 ÷ 0.4 = 3
5 + 3 = 8
Here is my reversibility strategy:
3.2 ÷ 0.4 = 8
0.4 x 8 = 3.2
0.4 x (5) =2.0
0.4 x (3) =1.2

I hope you learnt a different way to solve a division problem.

Red Rocks Diorama

Last term for Home Learning we constructed Red Rocks Dioramas to show our understanding of the novel we read "Red Rocks". At the end of last term we bought our creations to school and we enjoyed sharing them with our class and other Legend classes. My scene shows when Cara threw the computer out the window. She threw it out because she heard Jake talking to his dad about a seal skin which she was looking for. Jake (the boy) is running to the boat to get it. The things I used to make my diorama were paper, cardboard, paints and rocks.

Here is a photo of my finished Red Rocks diorama.

Show Me

In Jackson's Studio on Friday we learnt about the iPad app Show Me. Show Me is where you turn your iPad into an interactive whiteboard! It allows you to record voice-over whiteboard tutorials and share them online. It's an amazingly simple app that anyone can use! We have been using Show Me to record how we solved various maths problems.
Take a look at my Show Me video below, where I have created a video on how solve subtraction problems using the strategy of equal adjustments.

Poetry Anthology

This term Jackson’s Studio has been writing lots of different poems. Over the last week we have been publishing our poems on a website called Storybird. On Storybird we turned our poems into a book called Poetry Anthology, because an anthology is a collection of poems

Here is my book which my haiku, diamante, acrostic and two sense poems. Can you guess which poem is which?

I hope you enjoyed reading my poems. What one was your favourite?

Maths

For our blog post this fortnight I will show you how to work out what 5.5m-3.27=?
Here is the question.
"Dirk was wanting to enlarge the long jump pit. The existing pit measured 3.27m long and he needed to make it 5.5m long. How much does he need to add on?"

I did these ways to solve it.

Equal Adjustments:

5.5m-3.27m=?
+0.03m +0.03m
5.53m-3.3m=2.23m

Reversibility:

5.5m-3.27m=
3.27m+?=5.5m
3.27m+0.03m=3.3m
3.3m+0.7=4.0m
4.0m+1.5=5.5

0.03 + 0.7 + 1.5 = 2.23

Holiday Challenge

In writing we wrote a holiday challenge poem.I wrote mine about a wallaby park. I hope you like it.

I heard the wallabies mouths going chomp as I handed them their crumble food.

I heard mum heaving and hoeing as she lifted the heavy gate.

I saw their sharp claws grasping onto me as they ate.

I felt funny when the wallabies ate from my hands.

I felt happy when I stroked their soft fur near its tail.

I wondered if we would run out of food to feed them.

I wondered what the surprise at the end was going to be.
