Dear Benjamin,
Thank you for being a fantastic parent helper at the Spencer Park camp. We couldn't have done it without you. I appreciate how you took time off your work so that we could come on camp with us. One of the things I enjoyed was orienteering because it was fantastic jogging in the wind and finding posts .
Here is a recount I wrote about my favourite moment from camp.
“Are we going to get lost” I complained at the starting (finishing) point of orienteering. Benjamin said he hoped not but if we did he would help us become not lost. The first group went off, then the second, next the third, after that the fourth and then finally my group went. We went through the start and we saw the fourth group who had found a post in the bushes so we ran to find it. Then we ran to where we thought the next post would be and it was there. It was at a bridge. There were lot of native birds and lots of other birds and animals.
After we had found four posts we did some finding with a different group so that it made it easier. Then we got lost because we went one way and the group who we had worked with went the other way. They didn't’ get lost but we did. The sun was so hot that we started to get tired. We had to take lots of water. Finally we found our way and we found four more posts. One was in the bush, the next one was near a giant tree, the one after that was on a hill and the next one was near our huts. Then we found out that Zeke had broken our hut.
Next it was time to go back to the finishing place and while we walked Benjamin found one more post. A the end there was two more posts. One saying finish and the other one was we needed. We lunged towards the finish and I nearly tripped over. But at the end we won with another group.
It was a great orienteering but getting lost was definitely the worst part. I would have liked to thank Benjamin for being a great map person. I don’t think I want to do it again. The hardest post to find was the one in the bushes. Spencer Park is the best place for orienteering because it’s so big. Orienteering is good to learn because you can learn how to read a map.
Benjamin, it was a great camp and the meals that you made were extremely delicious. I really liked It when on level 2 the ropes at Adrenalin Forest were shaped like a v and you encouraged me so I could get through it. You said “Don’t look down and look at me” so I did and it worked. I hope this camp does not put you off going on any other camps. What was your favourite part about Spencer Park camp?
Yours sincerely,
Jonty
